Raging Bull

‘ I never went down Ray.. You never got me down Ray’

The boxing matches in Scorsese’s Raging Bull are extremely stylized, resembling that of a Cinematic Aria. The camera glides around the ring, dropping in and then back out again. The action tends to speed up, and then slow way back down.. Unusual animal sounds can be heard echoing throughout out the matches.

Scorsese wanted La Motta’s brutal beating in his final fight with Sugar Ray Robinson to feel like a horror film, so he based the rapid cuts on the shower scene from Psycho, even using Alfred Hitchcock’s original shot list. Between rounds, a blood-soaked sponge is seen being wiped across Lamotta’s back, and in the epic climax blood is seen dripping off the ropes
